NCAA Alumni Three Stars of the Month: February

Presented by Karen’s Print Rite

College hockey's 16-team field for the NCAA Tournament doesn't leave too much margin for error.  There are 64 teams in the ecosystem.  Six of them will earn an automatic NCAA bid, representing their conference as tournament champion.  One or two of those programs are likely to be the only team from their conference.  Meanwhile, dozens of other squads know that the only way into the NCAA bracket is to overcome expectations and skate away with a surprising conference tournament title against rivals who have been better throughout the season.

Perhaps only a handful of schools can be truly confident right now that they are assured the chance to skate in an NCAA Regional.  None of the alumni chosen as our Three Stars for February have that assurance.  All of them are on teams that need to be their best right now, and each of these individuals produced clutch efforts.

With the schedule melting away faster than the late winter snow, here are the top former Hawks from the last full month of the college season.

#3 Star – Logan Stein, Gr.
Michigan

The Wolverines listed Stein as their backup goalie for the first four games of the month, but midway through the second period on February 14th, he was called off the bench during a game against Minnesota.  Michigan trailed 1-0, and starting goalie Cameron Korpi was shaken up.  Stein stopped 18 of 19 shots he faced, and the Wolverines clawed back a 3-2 overtime win.

The next night, Stein played all 65 minutes during an overtime rematch, which finished 2-2.  The graduate transfer made 33 saves.  He also was in the crease during both Michigan games to conclude the month: a 2-1 overtime loss and a 4-3 win versus Ohio State.

Stein gave Michigan an opportunity to win all four of his appearances, finishing with a 2-1-1 record.  He stopped 92.2 percent of the shots he faced, with a 2.19 goals-against average; both of those metrics are better than his season-long figures.

#2 Star – Kyle Haskins, Gr.
Canisius

February was tough on the Golden Griffins, who went 2-7-0.  Haskins was a distinctive bright spot, producing five goals and three assists for eight total points.  He finished the month with a point in four consecutive games, then added another goal on March 1st to extend the streak to five-in-a-row.  The surge has pushed Haskins to second in team scoring this season with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists).  Haskins has easily surpassed the 15 points he recorded in 2023/24, his previous best season at the NCAA level.

On February 15th (one day before his 25th birthday), Haskins scored twice during a 5-3 comeback win against Bentley.  The early birthday celebration represented his first career multigoal game at the college level.  Haskins' night also included the game-winner.  He had another multipoint game (one goal, one assist) when the Griffins met Niagara the following weekend.  Three of Haskins' five February goals were scored on the power play.

#1 Star – Casey Severo, Jr.
Harvard

During February alone, Severo was only two points shy of matching the scoring total he earned all of last season.  By generating 11 points (six goals, five assists), the junior propelled himself among the top 150 offensive players in college hockey this season.  For the winter, Severo is up to 24 points (14 goals, 10 assists) in 29 games.  He has the most goals among Harvard players and is one of only two skaters on the team with more than 10.  His point total ranks second.

The month began ominously; the Crimson were blasted 7-1 by Boston University during the opening round of the Beanpot Tournament.  Severo had the lone Harvard goal.  During the consolation game versus Northeastern a week later, the former Hawk assisted on one power play goal, then scored another during a 4-3 victory.

Back to ECAC competition that weekend, Severo delivered his highest-scoring night of the season: two goals and two assists during a 6-2 road victory at St. Lawrence.  The Crimson were able to conclude their February schedule with a .500 record thanks to Severo's last highlight.  Facing their ancient rival Yale, the game went to overtime tied, 3-3.  With Harvard on a power play, Severo camped at the top of the crease and stuffed in a rebound 30 seconds into extra time, delivering the victory.  The Crimson go into the ECAC Tournament as the #7 seed and face RPI this weekend.
