Joe Greene

JOE GREENE

PRESIDENT & CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Veteran hockey executive Joe Greene joined the Waterloo Black Hawks in June of 2015.

He was promoted from vice president to president by the Black Hawks in March 2019, with his role expanded to Chief Operating Officer in March of 2023.  That same month, the organization was presented with the Grow Cedar Valley Business of the Year Award for companies of 1-50 employees.

With a decade of prior sports experience, Greene's efforts have generated fun, family-friendly promotions to enhance the fan experience during successful terms with four professional hockey clubs and an independent-league baseball team.  As president of the Dayton Gems of the Central Hockey League from 2010-2012, the team was recognized as the CHL's Community Relations Franchise of the Year.  In 2009/10, Greene was the Missouri Mavericks' assistant general manager in that club's CHL expansion season, and at the conclusion of the campaign, the Mavericks were recognized by the league with Group Sales Franchise and Merchandising Franchise of the Year awards.

Greene's first role in professional sports was with the CHL's Topeka Tarantulas in 2004/05.  He spent the following four seasons with the circuit's Wichita Thunder, also serving concurrently with the Wichita Wingnuts baseball club of the American Association.  Prior to working at the team level, he was on air in radio as assistant sports director for a group of eight radio stations in Garden City, Kansas.

From 2012 through his hiring by the Black Hawks, Greene served as Customer Service and Marketing Manager for Twin Valley Telephone, a voice, cable, and internet communications provider for customers in north central Kansas.  He is a 2002 graduate of Fort Hays State University.

  Jay Dobes

JAY DOBES

DIRECTOR OF SALES

Jay Dobes is a Cedar Valley native who grew up in Waterloo’s youth hockey program.  He brings a unique combination of familiarity with the community and experience in the sport after previously working with hockey clubs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Montana.  Upon returning to northeast Iowa in 2016, Dobes re-engaged with the Waterloo Youth Hockey Association in various roles, including Coaching Director.

He joined the Black Hawks in the summer of 2024 from a fulltime role at Waterloo-based O&P1 (Orthotics & Prosthetics).

As Director of Sales, Dobes works with businesses across the Cedar Valley.  Those relationships are crucial to the team’s on-ice success, while also providing the partner-companies with exposure via a team which generated over 80,000 in attendance during 2023/24.  Dobes also assists large groups as they enjoy Young Arena’s hospitality amenities.

This is Dobes’ second stint with the team.  From 2007 to 2010, he was a member of the Hawks’ hockey operations staff under Head Coach P.K. O’Handley.  In addition to on-ice work with Black Hawks players, Dobes managed a range of administrative tasks including hotel and travel arrangements.

Over the years which followed, his coaching career continued with the Twin Cities Northern Lights (Minnesota Junior Hockey League), Janesville Jets (North American Hockey League), and Butte Cobras (Western States Hockey League).  Dobes developed a wide skill set over that time and was involved in many aspects of those teams’ operations.  Back in the Cedar Valley beginning in 2016, Dobes has applied his knowledge within the WYHA, serving most recently as the head coach for the program’s Junior Gold team.
