The Waterloo Black Hawks turned away nine Cedar Rapids RoughRider power plays on Wednesday during a 5-4 overtime exhibition win at Young Arena.

Two of the successful penalty kills came during the final five minutes of regulation, and another halted the RoughRiders in overtime.  Waterloo had also denied Cedar Rapids during 1:41 of five-on-three power play time at the end of the second period and start of the third.
 
The shorthanded effort left room for Liam Schultz to score the game-winning goal with 59.5 seconds left in overtime.  Schultz pounced on a loose puck between the left circle and edge of the crease, winging a quick shot under the crossbar.

The Black Hawks had produced the lone goal of the first period at the 10-minute mark.  Toby Carlson created a screen at the edge of the crease, providing the opportunity for Colin Dustin's shot to beat Joseph Skidmore to the stick side.  Dustin was setup at the left dot by Miles Jinman.

Three goals in the first 6:08 of the second swung the game into the RoughRiders' favor.  Jackson Fox started the blitz 90 seconds out of intermission, hitting the top corner on a shorthanded two-on-one rush.

Just 1:13 later, Noel Ohgren put the visitors in front when hit tipped in a shot by Mason Minor.  Cade Sherman added another Cedar Rapids goal at 6:08, hitting an open side as the trailer on a transition sequence.

Salvatore Viviano drew a goal back at 13:48, capitalizing on a Waterloo power play.  His one-timer from the right dot was teed up by Caleb Deanovich.

Waterloo tied the game twice in the third period.  Brendan Russell leveled the score 5:06 out of intermission, squeezing up the right boards, cutting in from a sharp angle, and putting his chance in off goalie Paul Suda.

Nathan Chorlton pushed the RoughRiders back ahead with their second shorthanded goal of the night at 7:10, swiping the puck at the Waterloo blue line before hitting the net on a partial breakaway.  Trevor O'Donohue had the answer during another Hawks power play at 10:52.  He made it a 4-4 game by shoveling in the rebound of Deanovich's bid from the left point.

Waterloo concludes the preseason this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Des Moines Buccaneers.  Friday's game is at Young Arena starting at 6:35.  All seats are $10 and are available from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.  The two clubs reconvene in Des Moines Saturday to wrap up the exhibition slate.
