Postgame Recap: Hawks Sweep Weekend Against Lincoln

Follow Up with Saturday Road Win

Charlie Menard made 28 saves to defeat his former team during the Waterloo Black Hawks' 2-1 win against the Lincoln Stars at the Ice Box Saturday.

Menard was traded to Waterloo just before the season began.  The win moves him to 5-1-2 this season.  The Black Hawks had also won Friday's game against the Stars at Young Arena with Sebastian Charvat in goal.

The follow-up contest started late due to a shattered pane of glass at the end of warmups.  Lincoln had an early power play giving them momentum throughout a first period, which finished with no score.

The Stars had a full two minutes of five-on-three power play time early in the second, but they were turned away with only limited chances.

Taking momentum, Waterloo eventually seized the lead at 8:17.  Miles Jinman set up a blast from Cody Sokol from just above the left circle hashmark, and Sokol beat Lukas Stuhrmann with what proved to be the only goal in the first 40 minutes.

Almost exactly 20 minutes after Sokol's goal, Caleb Deanovich provided a crucial third period insurance goal.  His shot from the right point changed directions off a defender, eluding Stuhrmann inside the opposite post.

The Hawks couldn't add any more scoring with a four-minute power play in the last eight minutes.  Instead, the Stars ended Menard's shutout bid with a six-on-four power play goal at 17:15.  Jack Holland banged in a centering feed from the top of the crease.

Lincoln went to another late power play and again sent a sixth attacker to the ice, but could not bring the score even.  They finished one-for-six on the advantage, while the Hawks were turned away on all three chances.

Next weekend, the Black Hawks travel to the USHL's easternmost outpost for games on Friday and Saturday against the Youngstown Phantoms.
