Postgame Recap: Special Teams Power Hawks Win

Davis Scores Twice, Five-on-Five

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored on three of six power plays Friday, pulling away to a 5-1 win against the Lincoln Stars at Young Arena.

Although the Hawks lead the United States Hockey League in power play efficiency, Friday was the first time they have scored three power play goals in a game this season.  For good measure, the Hawks successfully killed the three penalties that put the Stars on the advantage.

Waterloo scored early and Lincoln scored late during the first period, both at even strength.  The Black Hawk goal came after an unsuccessful transition chance at 2:02.  On the rush, Camden Langfeld deflected a puck wide, but he went behind the net to find it.  Langfeld's centering pass clicked with Keegan Davis, who put in a low chance from between the circles.

Lincoln's tally also resulted from a rush.  All three Stars forwards touched the puck, leaving Evan Malkhassian with an open side at 14:04.

After being stopped on their first two power plays, the Black Hawks broke through to score on the next two.  At 12:15 of the second, Waterloo was deep into an advantage when the puck came to Miles Jinman at the left dot.  He lifted a bid just under the crossbar for his first USHL goal.

The Hawks went right back to the advantage as a result of the next shift and scored again at 13:08.  Caleb Deanovich was left alone in the left circle.  Cody Sokol found the defenseman, who beat William Prowse with a quick shot before the goalie could reorient from left to right.

Sokol added the final power play tally at 4:54.  Lincoln couldn't gain possession right of their net, and instead, the puck found Waterloo's top scorer.  Sokol wrapped it around and in.

Then for the second time, the Hawks followed up one goal with another less than a minute later.  Prowse gloved a shot by Langfeld, but it slipped out of his mitt.  Davis was there to pounce for his second of the game at 5:26.

Goalie Sebastian Charvat earned his sixth win during seven starts.  He made 20 saves as Waterloo outshot the visitors 32-21.

The Hawks and Stars face each other again Saturday in Lincoln.  It's the first of three consecutive road games for Waterloo; next weekend, the Black Hawks visit the Youngstown Phantoms.
