The Muskegon Lumberjacks scored a power play goal 1:53 into overtime Thursday, edging the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-2 at USG Arena in Chicago during the USHL Fall Classic.
It's the second straight year Waterloo has claimed a single point from their debut game against the Lumberjacks. Last year at the Fall Classic, Muskegon edged the Hawks 4-3 at the end of a 12-round shootout.
Zaac Charbonneau scored the game-winner Thursday during an extra period power play. The 16-year-old was camped out at the right faceoff dot. He fired home a one-timer served up by Felix Farhammar.
Cody Sokol had produced the first Hawks goal of the season and the only goal of the first period. Tomas Malinek hit Sokol with a pass along the left boards. Sokol stepped past a check and through the circle to the top of the crease, stuffing in a backhander.
A little more than four minutes later, Charlie Menard preserved the lead with a big save on Nick Kosiba's partial breakaway.
The Lumberjacks started the second period well and capitalized on an early opportunity at 1:11. Charbonneau was behind the Hawks net and set up Strider Carhart for the score from between the rings.
Both teams were denied on power plays as the period continued, but Waterloo retook the lead at 13:11. The teams were skating four-on-four when Noa Nsonsa Kitala made a 150-foot rush from his own zone, stepped around a defender, and flipped in a bid from the left circle.
However, Billy MacAusland produced the only goal of the third period to tie the score at 6:28, sending in a second rebound chance after two Menard saves.
Menard finished with 21 stops. Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz made 22 as the teams both finished with 24 shots on net.
The Hawks wrap up their trip to the Fall Classic on Friday with another 3:30 p.m. contest. Friday's game is against the Youngstown Phantoms.
