Three Waterloo Black Hawks had multiple points Friday on the way to a 5-1 victory at Young Arena against the Sioux City Musketeers.
Sal Viviano produced two goals and an assist. Linemates Hayden Russell and Cody Sokol also had solid games, as all three forwards recorded their fifth goals of the season during the matchup.
It looked like the Musketeers had opened the scoring during a power play 4:35 into the game. However, Evan Jones' goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference.
Instead, the Black Hawks went to the lead at 7:47 with the only goal of the period. Viviano kept a puck alive at the side of the Sioux City net, pushing it back to Russell in the slot, who lifted it in. The Hawks preserved the lead to intermission, despite a five-minute penalty which sent Keegan Davis to the Waterloo locker room.
The first Waterloo power play of the game yielded a goal at 7:25 of the second. Dylan Nolan was positioned at the top of the left circle and wired a shot under the crossbar.
Then Viviano made it 3-0 at 16:59. He was the trailing player on a rush. Sokol found him with a pass - and alone between the circles - Waterloo's captain beat Hugo Severgardh low to the glove side.
Viviano scored again 52 seconds into the third period. Russell found him to cap an odd-man rush, connecting on a pass from circle to circle and leaving Viviano with an open side.
Sokol delivered the final Hawks goal at 4:02. He forced a takeaway, then put his shot through two defenders and past Severgardh.
The 5-0 count held until 5:02 remained. Jake Merens scored on a lacrosse-style wraparound for Sioux City's lone goal.
Charlie Menard stopped 14 other Musketeers shots, bumping his record to 4-0-2.
The Black Hawks are right back on the ice at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The home matchup features trick-or-treating on the concourse and an on-ice costume contest for kids. Good seats are still available from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
