The Des Moines Buccaneers went two-for-three on the power play and held the Waterloo Black Hawks scoreless until the final minute, prevailing 4-1 Thursday at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex.
The exhibition matchup wrapped up Waterloo's preseason schedule. The Hawks will see Des Moines again before the end of September, hosting a matchup at Young Arena on September 27th.
Keaton Orrey converted an early power play just 2:35 into the game, setting up the wire-to-wire Des Moines win.
Blake Zielinski recorded the next two goals. He found the net at 5:20 of the second period, then again when Des Moines was on another advantage early in the third. Joseph Argentina added the last Buccaneer goal with six-and-a-half minutes to play.
Max Weilandt carried his shutout bid into the late moments. However Travis Lefere found the net with four seconds left, providing Waterloo's most tangible highlight.
Now the Hawks turn their attention to the DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. Waterloo opens the regular season during that event in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania next Wednesday against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
