Griffin Erdman scored twice, and Jack Spicer made 22 saves Friday, allowing the Waterloo Black Hawks to overtake the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for a 3-1 win at ImOn Ice Arena.
Waterloo trailed 1-0 at the second intermission. The successful end result marked the third time the Hawks have won when down at the end of 40 minutes, bumping Waterloo's record to 3-15-0 in those circumstances.
The Hawks killed off three-and-a-half minutes of Cedar Rapids power play time at the end of the second. They finished off the double-minor shorthanded situation early in the third, creating the chance for Erdman to tie the game at 5:41. Working behind the RoughRider net, he banked the puck in off the backside of goalie Rudy Guimond.
The 1-1 score held thanks to a great Spicer save on the next shift. Cedar Rapids sprang Ben Muthersbaugh on a breakaway, but the Hawks netminder turned away his low shot into the corner.
As the game moved into the late stages, Waterloo sustained pressure in the RoughRider zone. Erdman had been on the ice for a long shift when the puck came to Jaedon Kerr just inside the blue line with 1:23 to go. Kerr blasted a shot, and Erdman tipped it up under the crossbar for the go-ahead goal.
Guimond went to the bench for a sixth attacker shortly after play resumed. Eventually, Gavin Lindberg intercepted a pass in the defensive zone, sending it down the ice. Gavyn Thoreson caught up with it and flipped a chance into the open goal with 19.9 seconds to go.
The RoughRiders had scored their lone goal 1:23 before the first intermission. Colin Grable's shot from the right point was stopped, but the rebound off of Spicer floated through midair before being batted in by Hans Martin Ulvebne.
Friday's win moves the Hawks to 4-3-0 in the season series against Cedar Rapids, including three road victories.
Waterloo continues their current three-game weekend on Saturday at Young Arena against the Tri-City Storm. The 6:05 p.m. game is the team's annual Guns & Hoses Night in recognition of area first responders and presented by Double A Management on Conquer Property Services.
