The Green Bay Gamblers won on the strength of their special teams performance Saturday, defeating the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-1 at the Resch Center.
The Gamblers went two-for-two on the power play and denied all three Waterloo advantages. That included a four-minute double minor during the late minutes of the second period, carrying into the early third.
Gamblers netminder Gavin Moffatt stopped 34 Waterloo shots. Fourteen of those saves came during the third, thwarting the Hawks' comeback bid.
Green Bay scored the game's first goal in the closing seconds of a power play at 9:43 of the first period. Jayson Shaugabay's determined effort to keep a puck at the Waterloo blue line ultimately led to Charlie Russell's one-timer from the top of the left circle.
The 1-0 score held until 18:29 when Gavyn Thoreson tied the game. Stepping around a Gambler defender, Waterloo's top scorer moved to the hashmark on right wing, flicking a shot from there past Moffatt.
Green Bay scored the only goal in the second at 14:22. Jason Gallucci's shot from the deep slot crossed up Calvin Vachon, with the puck finding its way inside the post at the Hawk netminder's right.
Libor Nemec added Green Bay's second power play goal at 6:03 of the third, receiving a pass at the side of the net and spinning it inside the opposite post. Julian Lutz set up that play, then added an empty-netter at 17:35.
The Hawks play their third consecutive road game next Friday against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. They return to Young Arena the next night against the Tri-City Storm.
