Postgame Recap: Kuzma, Capitols Defeat Hawks

Waterloo Stumbles at Start of Weekend

Andrew Kuzma scored a pair of second period goals and finished with a hat trick on Friday as the Madison Capitols topped the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.

Madison goalie Patriks Berzins made 26 saves in the Capitols' net.  Calvin Vachon stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced in the loss.

Hawks defenseman Dylan Compton scored the only goal of the first period.  At 4:21, Compton was at the right point; he put a shot into traffic.  The puck made it through the maze at the netmouth and eluded Berzins.

Madison did all the scoring in the second period.  Charlie Michaud tied the game at 7:59 on a shot from the right circle that fluttered over Vachon's glove.  The Capitols took the lead with a conversion during their first power play of the game, not quite three minutes later.  Kuzma blasted a one-timer inside the post from where he was stationed just outside the right faceoff dot.

Kuzma scored again with 1:44 left in the period.  With a misplayed puck left free in the left circle, Kuzma wound up and blasted it between the pipes to make it a two-goal Capitols lead.

Grady Deering brought the Hawks back within one just 22 seconds into the third period.  Berzins mishandled a puck behind the Madison net after a dump in; it ricocheted out to the top of the crease.  Deering got there in time to tap it in.

However, Madison went back ahead by two at 2:07.  A deflected shot from the right point left Max Nagel with an open side when the puck came his way in the left circle.

After two unsuccessful Madison power plays, Kuzma settled the outcome with this third goal, an empty-netter at 18:49.

Waterloo's Wisconsin weekend continues on Saturday; the Black Hawks visit the Green Bay Gamblers at 6:05 p.m.
