Postgame Recap: Spicer Stops Everything Saturday

Shutout and Shootout in Dubuque

Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Jack Spicer made 27 saves, then turned away three more Dubuque Fighting Saints shootout attempts for a 1-0 win at Imon Arena.

It was Spicer's first USHL shutout.  He made 11 first period saves, then six and seven in the second and third periods respectively.  Spicer also denied the Saints three times during a back-and-forth overtime.  Saturday's result was Waterloo's third shutout of the season.

Jakub Altrichter had the only shootout conversion, coming in the third round.  The veteran forward started right before making his way slowly through the circle and toward the opposite edge of the crease, slipping a low shot past James Norton.

The Dubuque netminder made 30 saves.

Spicer then delivered the victory by sticking with Erik Pahlsson and stopping his final attempt.  Pahlsson was below the circle to Spicer's right before triggering a sharp-angled, low-percentage try.

It was the Hawks' second shootout win in Dubuque.  Waterloo previously rolled away with a 5-4 shootout victory on September 29th.  Adding that result to two other meetings at Young Arena, the two teams had combined to score 30 goals in the three contests, a far cry from Saturday's goaltending clinic.

Waterloo was denied on six power play tries, including almost a minute of five-on-three time in the second period.  Dubuque went 0-for-4.  Both sides had fruitless power plays in the last seven minutes of regulation.

The Hawks and Saint match up again on Sunday in Waterloo.  Limited tickets still remain for the New Year's Eve game at 6:05 p.m.  Seats can be ordered around the clock from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office after 11 a.m. at (319) 291-7680.
