Postgame Recap: Hawks, Vachon Victorious on Thanksgiving

Waterloo Now 6-2-0 at Young Arena

Calvin Vachon stopped all 18 Cedar Rapids RoughRiders shots Thursday, providing a shutout performance for the Waterloo Black Hawks in a 2-0 Thanksgiving win at Young Arena.

It is the first time Waterloo has blanked an opponent in more than a season.  The Hawks' last shutout was a 4-0 effort against the Des Moines Buccaneers on April 23, 2022, the final night of the 2021/22 schedule.

The first-year Waterloo netminder was at his best in the third period, when he faced 11 Cedar Rapids shots.  Vachon becomes the fifth goalie with a Thanksgiving shutout for the Hawks, joining Jim Coyle (1966), Phil Osaer (1997), Robbie Beydoun (2016), and Logan Stein (2019).

It took more than 38 minutes, but the Black Hawks broke a scoreless deadlock and started the annual Teddy Bear Toss late in the second period.  Tyler Miller and Nick Fascia exchanged the puck, as well as their positions at the blue line, before Fascia triggered a shot from the right point.  Gavyn Thoreson tipped it down between the skates of Sam Scopa at 18:08.

Waterloo came through a third period RoughRider power play unscathed.  The teams also skated four-on-four for two minutes with no change in the count.

The game moved into the late minutes with the visitors looking to bring Scopa to the bench, however Waterloo added an insurance goal before that could happen.  Gavin Lindberg and Jakub Altrichter worked the puck into the offensive zone on left wing.  Grady Deering got a piece of Altrichter's shot from the left circle, helping it elude Scopa with 1:02 remaining.

The Black Hawks and RoughRiders don't wait long for a rematch; the teams see each other again in Cedar Rapids on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
