Postgame Recap: Hawks Fall in Stretch Run

Match Sioux City for Two Periods

The Sioux City Musketeers broke a 2-2 tie with three third period goals to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at Tyson Events Center Friday.

Prior to the matchup, the Hawks had scored at least once during every third period they had played this season.  However, the visitors were credited with just two shots on goal in the final frame, as the Musketeers clamped down to win their home opener.

Jonah Aegerter scored the go-ahead - and eventually game-winning – goal at 8:00 of the third.  Waterloo could not halt a slow-developing rush, with Aegerter cutting past the right hashmark to score on a low shot.

Kaden Shahan added his second goal of the night on a sharp-angled power play chance at 11:18.  Then Easton Jacobs capped the scoring with an empty-netter from the Black Hawks' blue line with 2:18 to go.

Sioux City had capitalized on the game's first power play for the opening goal at 8:32.  Shahan was left with a wide open net at the edge of the crease, thanks to a pass across the slot by Brian Nicholas.

The Hawks evened up the score about eight minutes later.  Jakub Altrichter won a puck along the end wall, flicking a pass to the side of the net.  Eero Butella was waiting to stuff it in, to the left of Samuel Urban.

The second period followed the same pattern.  The Musketeers went back in front when defensemen Joseph Mense was able to stride into the offensive zone and put a shot in off the crossbar from the top of the right circle at 9:39.

It was a Waterloo defenseman who tied it up at 13:29.  Jaedon Kerr was the puck carrier on a two-on-one.  He took the shot himself and roofed the chance over Urban's left shoulder.

The Hawks remain on the road Saturday, visiting the Sioux Falls Stampede.  The official start time is 6:05 p.m.
