The Dubuque Fighting Saints scored four third period goals, flipping Saturday's game at Young Arena and topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 6-5.
Power play scores by Jake Sondreal and Lucas St. Louis - recorded less than four minutes apart - erased a 4-2 Black Hawks lead. Then with 5:40 to go, Erik Pahlsson lifted in a feed originating from Juraj Pekarcik, putting the visitors ahead for good. Jayden Jubenvill's empty net goal from near his own blue line at 18:18 proved to be the game-winner.
The result halted a four-game Waterloo winning streak. The Hawks wrapped up October with a 4-3-0 mark during the month.
Each team had scored a late first period goal. The Saints' tally came in transition at 15:17, with James Reeder carrying the puck up left wing before slinging a pass to Sondreal at the top of the opposite circle. His quick release was fast enough to send the puck to the net, even though Jack Spicer got a piece of the chance.
Waterloo answered at 16:48. Jakub Altrichter flew up ice and John Mustard kept pace. Altrichter slipped the puck to Mustard's forehand, with Mustard finishing the chance to the stick side of Kevin Reidler.
The Hawks took their first lead on the power play at 5:44 of the second. After a faceoff win, Mustard was moving across the high slot from right to left when he beat Reidler to the netminder's right for a second time. The long shot made it through traffic and just inside the post.
Jubenvill evened the game at 8:35, jumping into a rush to finish a feed from Reeder at the top of the Hawks crease.
However, Waterloo led for the rest of the period after a close-in score by Gavin Lindberg. Finding possession behind the net, he moved to the edge of the blue paint and wrapped around a goal inside the opposite post from where he had started.
Jackson Nevers gave the Hawks a two-goal lead in the first shift of the third period. Speeding up right wing, his wrister from near the top of the circle beat Reidler cleanly. Waterloo also scored the last goal of the period following Dubuque's four-goal outburst. Tyler Miller hit the net with a half slapshot from the left point as the Hawks were skating six-on-five with 14.7 seconds to go.
The Black Hawks wrap up their five-game homestand next Saturday against the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The 6:05 p.m. game is Waterloo's Hockey Fights Cancer Assist Night, presented by Mike Molstead Motors. The jerseys the team wears will be auctioned after the game to benefit the American Cancer Society.
